The six second clip includes text which reads: "Relationship advice: Some years back my wife and I got into the habit of asking each other 'do you want comfort or solutions' when the other was having a bad time.

"That one sentence can save us from an argument 9/10 times."

Viewers were quick to praise the advice, with one writing: "I'm studying to become a therapist so when my bf isn't feeling great I find it hard not to offer advice and want to talk, doing this has helped a lot."

Another added: "THIS! I've been struggling with communicating my need for comfort when I'm stressed. My partner offers solutions usually [because] they want to help."

One user asked the Psychology student: "Can you explain the comfort part? Does comfort in this example mean not talking or fighting?" To which he replied: "Comfort could be being present with your partner and listening to their feelings/problems empathetically instead of finding a solution for them."

In the comments section, Tom credits the tip to the writer, Alexander James. In January 2021, the writer Tweeted the advice to his followers, which has 66.4 likes.

One reply, from @KenHume7, agreed: "I like that approach, I really do! As there's some days my wife comes home from work, having had a really bad day, and she just wants to vent! No solutions or problem solving just to vent. And I listen to her or try to at least."

However, one take on the Tweet was met with uncertainty from James. The user wrote: "I say something similar to this whenever a loved one asks for my opinion. I say: "Do you want my actual advice or do you want me to make you feel better?"

James replied: "Interesting approach. From an outside opinion that’s a pretty knives-out way of communicating because it sounds like (again, my opinion) you’re really asking ‘want my real opinion, or want me to lie to you to spare your feelings’."
